Write To Heal
Our partnership with the Cancer Support Community of North Texas enables us to provide patients and their loved ones with creative writing workshops, lectures, and readings that address their unique challenges. In the past, patients have been led through a Zine Camp where they blended art and poetry to produce a mini-book detailing their journey. We’ve also hosted 2010 Texas State Poet Laureate Karla K. Morton in a dinner experience that brought the community together to discuss “Expressions of Survivorship.” Our programming offers ways to find community, create beauty, and become emotionally stronger through creative outlets.
The Writer’s Garret has developed Writing Over War to support military veterans, their families, and others affected by conflict. Our workshops offer strategies to help participants process and write about their intense experiences, tell them with skill and power, and share in a way that will help others better understand their service. Recent partners include Juliette Fowler Communities, Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic, VFW Post 6796, Bring Everyone in the Zone, and VSA Texas’ Distinguished Artist Veterans Program.
