Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools

WINS Programs

The Writer’s Garret connects with people of all ages, walks of life, and communities through Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools (WINS).

WINS places professional writers in schools, after-school programs, and community-based agencies to engage children, youth, educators, families, and “at risk” populations in the literary arts. WINS offerings include creative writing classes, book clubs, poetry slams, zine camps, readings, and presentations–in print, via audio and video, and on-line.

Our teaching artists come from diverse backgrounds with extensive writing experience as their foundation. Many have MFAs in the arts. In addition to being widely published writers, many are photographers, musicians, and performers who have taught in unique locations here and abroad. All are committed to exploration of the self and the world through the written word.

What do we bring to schools and neighborhoods?

Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools (WINS) offers an innovative approach to education. We send professional writers into K-12 classrooms and after-school programs to share their passion for reading and writing. We bring the keys to unlock stories.

Our instructors introduce students to the fact that they are writers with experiences and imaginations worth exploring.  This exploration occurs in workshops that hone not only writing skills but our students’ abilities to think critically and communicate effectively. Our workshops are a hands-on experience with creative writing for every learning style, and the lessons don’t begin simply with pencil, paper, and seated students. Students use their bodies, they draw, they listen to music: they engage the literary arts through all possible avenues. Great literature—both classic and contemporary—inspires our students.

We tailor our lessons to fit grade-specific TEKS objectives so that as the students’ writing improves, they also become test-ready. We’ve seen test scores for reading and writing increase by as much as 14%.  Whether you want to delve into prose and poetry or use writing to explore other forms of art, great literature, and themselves, we offer courses for every student and situation.
