CAMP Clinic

CAMP Clinic is The Writer's Garret's manuscript consultation service. Send us your novel, memoir, or collection (short fiction / poetry / essays), and a member of The Writer's Garret community—a practicing writer and / or editor—will read and offer their professional opinion and insight on your work.


Why Consult?

  • Your manuscript is complete but needs final polishing and revision before it will be in a publishable or industry-standard form.
  • You would like to have your manuscript read for clarity and continuity.
  • You feel stuck or have a manuscript that has "stalled."
  • You desire tightly focused feedback on a particular aspect of your manuscript.

Basic Critique

Provide your completed manuscript (mss.) and receive general comments (2 - 3 pages [pp.], typed, single-spaced) on merits of mss.; assessment of strengths and weakness of writing; revision suggestions; suggestions of potential markets for mss.

  • 0 - 50 pp.: $120 
  • 51 - 150 pp.: $300 
  • 151 - 300 pp.: $480 
  • 301 - 500 pp.: $720*

Manuscript Consultation

Provide a synopsis and sample (no more than 50 p.) of your mss. and receive suggestions on how to develop and place your mss. with a publisher or agent.

  • $155 + a one-time consultation fee of $50*

Self-Publishing Package

Get advice and receive help preparing your mss. (copy-editing, layout, etc.) for self-publication.

  • 0 - 50 pp.: $120
  • 51 - 150 pp.: $300
  • 151 - 300 pp.: $480
  • 301 - 500 pp.: $720 + a one-time consultation fee of $75*

Book Proposal & Agent Query Consultation

Receive feedback and suggestions on your completed proposal and / or query.

  • $90 per proposal / query

Book Proposal & Agent Query Writing

Hire a writer with experience in the publishing industry to compose your proposal and / or query.

  • $120 per proposal / query

Proof-Reading

Have all typos, misspellings, and errors in punctuation in your mss. identified and corrected.

  • $0.60 / p. + a one-time administrative fee of $20*

Copy-Editing

Have your mss. reviewed for grammar, syntax, usage, spelling and punctuation; have all errors identified and corrected.

  • $0.90 / p. + a one-time administrative fee of $20*

Poetry Manuscript Preparation

Get advice (with regard to issues of flow, continuity, thematic placement, etc.) and assistance on arranging and formatting your poetry collection.

  • 0 - 50 pp.: $100
  • 51 - 150 pp.: $250
  • 151 - 300 pp.: $400 + a one-time consultation fee of $50*

Ghost-Writing

Hire a professional writer to flesh out your idea, tell your story, and develop your mss.

  • 0 - 50 pp.: $300
  • 51 - 150 pp.: $480
  • 151 - 300 pp.: $720
  • 301 - 500 pp.: $900 + a one-time consultation fee of $100*

Screenplay Formatting

Have your completed screenplay proof-read and formatted in accordance with film / television industry standards.

  • 0 - 50 pp.: $180
  • 51 - 150 pp.: $360 + a one-time administrative fee of $100

*Please note that all rates quoted above (excepting those quoted for Screenplay Formatting) apply only to manuscripts formatted according to the following standard:

  • double-spaced
  • with all margins set to at least 1 inch
  • with type set in a 12 point standard font face.

Manuscripts received in a different format are subject to adjusted rates.


Response Time

4 - 8 weeks depending on length of submission and services requested.


Does The Writer's Garret Offer Any Discounted CAMP Clinic Services?

  • If you spend more than $250 through the CAMP Clinic, you will receive a 25% discount on any one (1) class offered by The Writer's Garret.
  • If you spend more than $500 through the CAMP Clinic, you will receive a 50% discount on any one (1) class offered by The Writer's Garret.
  • If you spend more than $1000 through the CAMP Clinic, you will receive a tuition waiver on any one (1) class offered by The Writer's Garret.
  • Hardship rates are available for those with special needs; contact us for additional details.

What CAMP Clinic Is NOT

  • CAMP Clinic is not an agency-referral service.
  • CAMP Clinic is not a mentoring service; if you are interested in establishing a continuing, one-on-one relationship with a writing coach, please email us about our CAMP Out program.
