Programs for Young People
Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools (WINS)
Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools (WINS) offers an innovative approach to education. We send professional writers into K-12 classrooms and after-school programs to share their passion for reading and writing. Our instructors introduce students to the fact that they are writers with experiences and imaginations worth exploring. View our program descriptions here.
Print & Audio Anthologies
We help young people to take themselves seriously as writers by putting their OWN words in print, giving them opportunities to read their creative work before live audiences, and by recording their work in audio files. When they know other people are going to see and hear their work, the desire to “get it right” increases a hundredfold. Revision, editing, spelling become self-driven.
Rail Writers (& Other Cool Projects)
One of the most innovative programs around, urban youth–who may never have left their neighborhood–EVER–ride and write on Trinity Rail Trains and see the sites. Then, after practicing performance, hop on and off DART stops, and give flash mob readings to folks at parks, window shopping, or sitting in sidewalk cafes. A treat for all! instructors introduce students to the fact that they are writers with experiences and imaginations worth exploring.
For Educators & Families
Our workshops are a hands-on experience with creative writing for every learning style, and the lessons don’t begin simply with pencil, paper, and seated students. We tailor our lessons to fit grade-specific TEKS objectives so that as the students’ writing improves, they also become test-ready. Reading and Writing test scores increase by as much as 14%.
