WINS: Schools

Oct 22 2011 3:50 PM

Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools (WINS) offers an innovative approach to education. We send professional writers into K-12 classrooms and after-school programs to share their passion for reading and writing.

Our instructors introduce students to the fact that they are writers with experiences and imaginations worth exploring.  This exploration occurs in workshops that hone not only writing skills but our students' abilities to think critically and communicate effectively. Our workshops are a hands-on experience with creative writing for every learning style, and the lessons don't begin simply with pencil, paper, and seated students. Students use their bodies, they draw, they listen to music, they paint: they engage the literary arts through all possible avenues.

Great literature—both classic and contemporary—inspires our students. We tailor our lessons to fit grade-specific TEKS objectives so that as the students' writing improves, they also become test-ready. We've seen test scores for reading and writing increase by as much as 14%.
